KAIST Institutes (KI)

The KAIST Institute (KI) was established in August 2006 based on generous donations from a Korean-American businessman, Dr. Byiung Jun Park, and his wife, Ms. Chunghi Hong. KI aims to create Korea’s new growth engines through interdisciplinary and integrated research, and to contribute to the happiness and well-being of humankind through science and technology. KI consists of five research institutes: KI for the BioCentury, KI for Information Technology Convergence, KI for Design of Complex Systems, KI for the NanoCentury, and KI for Optical Science and Technology. Under each KI, there are also five affiliated research centers: Cancer Metastasis Control Center (CMCC), Mobile Sensors and IT Convergence Center (MOSAIC), Center of Field Robotics for Innovation, Exploration, aNd Defense (C-FRIEND), Graphene Research Center (GRC), and Center of Optics for Health. Also, the Saudi Aramco-KAIST Co2 Research Center was recently established to address climate change issues and to develop technologies focusing Co2 asare source. Currently, about 270 faculty members and 300 students and researchers are engaged in interdisciplinary research based on innovative ideas that will change the world. KI researchers will continue to strive to attain the following goals.

  • To create new industries and growth engines for Korea through cutting-edge interdisciplinary research.
  • To foster transparent interdisciplinary research groups through open innovation.
  • To become a leader in all-inclusive research covering science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences.
  • To reinforce Korea’s national competitiveness through collaborative research with a variety of enterprises ranging from large- to small- and medium-sized companies.
  • To serve as a cradle for technology-based start-up companies.
  • To become one of the world’s top research groups through collaboration with leading institutions and laboratories from around the world.
  • To educate and produce creative science and technology leaders through interdisciplinary and integrated research.

To achieve these goals, KI will continue to pursue “open innovation, interdisciplinary and integrated research, and work to create through consilience” (OI3RC2).

Energy, Environment, Water, and Sustainability(EEWS) Research Center

EEWS is the acronym for Energy, Environment, Water, and Sustainability. Through research in sustainable Green Growth, which aims at pioneering continuous developments in energy, environment, water, transportation and construction, this is a project structure that illustrates KAIST’s determination as it seeks to achieve its fundamental calling as a university by contributing to the development of our nation and humanity.

By conducting EEWS research, KAIST looks to lead the way in solving the primary societal issues of the 21st century, contribute to the nation’s Green Growth by securing related original technology and connecting research results with industry, and by creating a foundation for fostering research manpower that will lead the future of Green Growth.

High Risk High Return(HRHR) Research

  • Discover, expand, and provide basic research funding for creative and influential research ideas, research projects in which KAIST will cover all risks.
  • As projects that have not been attempted by other universities and research institutions in the nation, the core value lies in disseminating an endemic research culture that is challenging and creative.
  • There is great meaning in providing opportunities to nascent projects starting with seed money, and developing these projects into grand national enterprises or research projects that will influence all of humanity.

Undergraduate Research Program (URP)

Provide financial resources and academic credit for undergraduate research so that current KAIST undergraduates can conduct practical experiments and research under the supervision of a professor and teaching assistant.

Project Purpose
  • As an advocate of research oriented universities, KAIST aims to provide a wide range of opportunities for KAIST undergraduates to gain valuable experience through practical experiments and research projects.
  • Maintain connections with science high schools and high schools for the gifted, which are research and experiment oriented, and provide a creative and challenging education model that will contribute to academic inspiration and manpower cultivation.

BK 21 Plus Project

Concept

This project is fundamentally founded on creativity, to support new knowledge and technology creation and the cultivation of creative leaders that are equipped with at least a Master or Ph.D. degree, which will contribute to realizing a creative economy.

Propulsion Background
  • There is a desperate need for the cultivation of elite and creative leaders with at least a Master or Ph.D. degree, which will lead the realization of a creative economy.
  • Will realize a creative economy by fostering and supplying elite and creative post-graduates and Ph.D.s that will lead the nation in the creation of new technologies, creativity in society and liberal arts, cultural content, design, BIT, NIT, and other convergence sectors, to lead and transform the economy from a fast follower economy into a pioneering economy.
  • As a hub for the creation of producing outcomes and results, there is a need to enhance the creative environment in university education and research as part of the role of a university.

    Although the capacity of research carried out by domestic universities has increased dramatically, there are limitations in leading creative growth due to the relationship between university education/research outcomes and related new technologies.
