We are now starting to understand the biological phenomena as the complex network system with the hierarchical architecture. Since the typical dynamics of the most biological systems are not linear, understanding the molecular events cannot simply lead us to the wholistic understanding about the cellular responses to the specific stimuli under various contexts. The ultimate goal of computational and cellular biology laboratory is to delineate the dynamics underlying the complex cellular responses which look like a so-called chaotic system. To do that, we specifically focus on the intracellular biochemical networks which are responsible for proliferation, inflammation, angiogenesis and apoptotic cell death to develop predictable mathematical models for various human disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease, atherosclerosis and brain tumors. We utilize various systems biologic tools to investigate the complex behavior of cells, especially by developing mathematical models which will be validated by computational simulation methods.

We have been attempting to answer the two fundamental questions in the area of genome maintenance which is essential to perpetuate all forms of life in the earth. One is how the huge genome of organisms is maintained with a marvelous accuracy, and the other is with regard to what is the machinery to replicate the genome and how it acts to achieve the astonishing feat. In order to address these two issues, we are using several eukaryotic model systems which include yeast and human. Our study will reveal not only the mechanism of DNA replication in greater detail, but also give insight into how the genetic disease will arise by dysfunction of a replication factor during this process. Our contribution that we have made to the field of DNA replication has already placed our laboratory as one of the leading groups at the international level in nucleic acid enzymology.
