Information on Library Services

Borrow and Return Services (Tel. 2221)

A. borrow/return
  • Personnel who would like to borrow materials can use the library information system to check on availability, location (main library, annex, mathematics research centre, Seoul branch library) to determine status of material.
  • If the material is available, after determining the location of the material, user can look it up directly and borrow by showing user ID (ID card) on the 1st floor loan office. If there is unpaid fines under the user name, material can be loan out only after payment is made.
  • Material loan out must be returned to the library by the due date and it is imperative to check status to make sure it has been marked as returned.

B . Extension of loan and reservation service

For extension and reservations service, user can do so directly through the portal system “Libraryâ€. However, in the event that the due date has passed or if the materials is being reserved or if there is materials that are overdue, user cannot extend loan period. For reservations, as soon as materials is returned, the user is informed through online personal notices and the material will be held in the reserved section of the library for one week.

 

C. Due date and notification of overdue materials

User will receive due date notice three days prior to via e-mail and if material becomes overdue, user will be receive overdue notice on the due date and on every Monday after the due date. As such, in order to receive such reminders, users have to register their e-mail addresses on the science library homepage under “personal informationâ€.

 

D. Overdue fines and payment

If user fails to return material by the due date, there will be a per book fine of 100won per day. In the event that the fine is not paid, for students, they will lose borrowing privileges and for those preparing for graduation will encounter disadvantages. In case borrowed materials are damaged or lost, user must report to loan office immediately and replace the materials. If it is not possible to find an exact replacement, then user must compensate using the standard for lost materials.

 

E. Library mutual check out service
  • If materials are not available in the science library and found in any member library of Science and Technology Information Association, users will be able to borrow the materials from relevant library. Users can register with the Association through their website at http://www.stima.or.kr and apply for material directly, if not user can also leave their names and contact details with the loan office. The loan period of such mutual loans is within 14 days and user can extend this period once for another 7 days.
  • For materials found in library that is not part of the association, user can still obtain restricted access by requesting to the loan office

 

 

Original Materials Service(Tel: 2224, 2227)

A. Original materials service

For users who would like to use materials not found in the science library, a service providing access to the original copy from affiliated domestic and international organization is available. User can go to the science library homepage and request to a copy of the original material and requested material will be accessed through National affiliated organization (Korea Science and Technology Institute, Pohang Institute of Science and Technology, Samsung research centre). Materials is not found in Korea can be accessed through England’s BLDSC (British Library Document Supply Centre) and the US source of original copy for fast delivery.

 

B. Original Copy service (excluding original)

Service provided to users who are not registered member of KAIST and who want to use the main library’s collections of journal and Original Full Text (of theses). Non registered users must complete and submit request form to the relevant officer in the original institution from which the officer will use the NDSL original copy service and the DDS (Document Delivery System) operated by KAIST to apply for request. At 2002 present, approximately 250 universities, research centers, business organizations use the NDSL and DDS to apply for original text.

 

 

Reference Information Service(Tel. 2223)

Service providing assistance to individual library user and it refers to all the services provided by librarians to users who are looking for information. Reference services offered by our digital science library:

  • Providing data
  • Educating users with use of library and data
  • Information on making choice of material

 

are basic services and in addition, supply of electronic information such as online database, CD-ROM and Web database and Internet allowing users to access information and services even without visit to the library Materials kept in the Reference room include specific field related reference materials such as dictionaries, professional dictionaries, encyclopedia, language dictionaries, name index, yearbooks, atlas, law journals, various statistical reports, calendars of overseas institutions, index, abstract, bibliography. A red label is used on these materials and symbol “R†(reference book) is included as well for means of differentiating from normal materials and users are only allowed to use materials within the library.

 

Furthermore, there are approximately 70 types of periodicals as well as 7,800 types of various reports, individual volumes, handbooks, newspapers and around 10,000 units are kept in the form of roll film, fiche, cartridge, diskette, cassette tape, slide, video tape and disc. These materials can be viewed and printed using the CANON NP Printer 980 and printing cost 50won per page. For use of colored materials such as promotional articles, charts, scanning system is in place as well.

 

 

Request to Purchase Books (tel: 2222, 2226)

Refers to the service by which registered staff and students can purchase, donate and exchange materials required for academic review, research activities and others (theses, research reports, supplementary materials electronic materials) and purpose of service is to provide the required material in an quick and effective manner.

 

A. Purchase request for individual volume
  • Purchase using library budget
  • Fill in material information in the form “Request form for purchase of book†and submit to the library or go to library homepage, under ‘My Library’, fill in ‘Book requests’ section or go to portal system ‘Library’ and fill in requests online. Through the website, user can request for new purchase and at the same time check on status of application. Users who want to purchase a new book must choose ‘New Request’ on the webpage and enter the data for .. the book (title, author, publisher, ISBN, publication year, amount) and submit request.
  • Purchase using research fund Fill in ‘recommendation and book purchase’ form and submit to officer in charge for approval from relevant departments before submission to the library. Once book is purchases, it can be loaned out as material for research use for 3 years.

 

B. Request to purchase periodical materials
  • To subscribe using library fund periodicals that are currently subscribed will be so continuously and if there is allowance in the budget, library will take in request for more subscription which will be decided upon after review.
  • To subscribe using research fund Fill in ‘recommendation and book purchase’ form and submit to officer in charge for approval from relevant departments before submission to the library. Subscribed periodicals will be passed on to applicant after going through a check-in process.

 

 

Data Arrangement System (Tel: 2225)

Refers to the system employed by the library for the systematic arrangement of data to allow for the better utilization of library data so that users can approach easily. The digital science library is using the library of congress classification system and by marking related theme or structure with a suitable library code, the position of the material is determined.

Annex Library (tel: 2228)

A. Reading material room

The annex library follows the Library of Congress Classification and operates using complete shelf system and users can search for materials freely and for the leisure reading of students, there is a magazine room as well,

 

B. Assignment material and reference library

Major related books (assignment books) required by undergraduate students and basic reference books are available and the loan period for assignment materials is 3 days

 

C. Reading room and seminar room

There are 824 seats available in the free reading area and it is open 24hours everyday. Seminar rooms are divided into medium seminar room (24 seats), small seminar room (12 seats) and large seminar room (36 seats) and to request usage, submit to loan office in the 2nd floor.

 

D. Newspaper room

For the convenience of undergraduates, approximately 20 different types of newspapers are displayed for viewing purposes.
