The two driving forces for the information revolution are integrated circuit technology (e.g. CPUs, DRAMs) and optical communication. However, the two technologies have so far have never been integrated into one monolithic technology. Si has remained the material of choice for integrated electronic circuits, while photonics is based on assembly of many discrete components. However, if the information revolution is to be sustained, these two technologies would have to merge into one. We believe that Si photonics, defined as photonics using Si-based materials and Si-compatible processes, can be the answer to such problems. Thus, it is the goal of our lab to research materials and structures that can enable realization of Si photonics.

We study photonic crystals which are periodic arrays of dielectric (or metallic) composites having photonic band gaps, negative refraction, self-collimation, and superprism. Photonic crystals can be used to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves and applicable to waveguides, filters, microlenses, cavities, lasers, as well as photonic integrated circuits.

Activities in Space Sciences Laboratory include the development of scientific payloads for spacecraft and the analysis of the data obtained from these instruments. For example, an imaging spectrograph (FIMS) was built in the Laboratory for STSAT-1, which is currently in operation. Spectroscopic survey of our Galaxy using FIMS will map the distribution of interstellar hot gas in the far ultraviolet wavelengths. Spce plasma physics is also one of the major research areas in the Laboratory. Various plasma instruments developed in the Laboratory were operated on rockets and satellites, producing major scientific results.

Nonlinear Dynamics theory has the universality for all fields of science. We study the nonlinear dynamics and complex system theory like chaos, collective behavior, self-organization, pattern formation, and so on. Our research area is expanded to the application and interdisciplinary with biology, chemistry, sociology and economy.
